Team building was the name of the game this week, which is why some of the episode was dedicated to a softball game, which was where the funniest scenes happened. Derek and Callie both pulled off bad ass surgeries; which I loved. And April struggled as Chief Resident again. Owen told her to get off the sidelines, and start participating more. Callie nailed it when she told April to stop whining and do what she loves.
You’re My Person
Meredith and Cristina stole the show this week with their “you’re my person” scenes. At the beginning when they were laying on the ground staring up at the sky talking about surgery, Zola and eyelet cells, it reminded me of Season 2 when they go jogging in order to feel better about getting dumped.
Suddenly a ball almost hits them in the head and it’s quite clear that they are supposed to be practicing for a softball game but have chosen to lie on the grass and indulge in chitchat. Owen is yelling at them to “Look alive!” and Cristina waves and yells back “Hi Honey!”
Later on during the real game against Seattle Presbyterian; they are outrageously drunk and not concentrating on the game at all. Meredith gets into a verbal stoush with Bailey; telling Bailey in no uncertain terms to mind her own business, which Webber ends up refereeing. This was hilarious stuff from these two, some of the best Cristina and Meredith comedy that we’ve seen in a while.
Derek Pulls Off Another Miracle Surgery
Last week it was a butterfly tumor that Derek removed successfully and this week it was another difficult case; a young girl with a tumor that is causing her to have several seizures per day. Derek convinces the mother that he can remove the whole tumor, which he does.
Seems that Derek can’t put a foot wrong this season, pulling off miracle surgeries one after the other. One can’t help wondering if he’s heading for a major disappointment or a failed surgery at some stage.
Teddy Tells Cristina to Make a Bucket List
Cristina is paged to the OR when Callie and April’s patient becomes unstable; instead of jumping in to fix the problem herself she orders April to crack the guys chest, while she gets gowned and gloved. She then instructs April on how to repair the patient’s heart. When Teddy arrives she wants to know why Cristina let April take the lead. All Cristina can say is April was there. When they are finished Teddy tells Cristina she has graduated and to make a bucket list of surgeries.
Lexie Cannot Control the Green Eyed Monster
Lexie is unable to hide her feelings for Mark any longer. Her feelings come out in the worst, possible way, but it was a long time coming and it was about time. Firstly she made it quite clear to Jackson and everyone else that she was not enjoying watching Mark kiss his new girlfriend on the softball field. Secondly when the new girlfriend critiques her pitching skills, she throws a ball straight at the woman’s boobs. This was probably the funniest moment of the episode.
Alex Karev Takes a Bold Step
The Family Court subpoena Zola's medical records; apparently wanting to transfer the child’s care to Seattle Presbyterian. Alex grabs the file from Arizona telling her he will take care of it. When we next see Alex he is at the Office of Family Services trying to get information about Zola’s case.
Alex is directed to the correct office and speaks to one of the clerks there; essentially bribing her to release details about the case and which judge is handling Zola’s case. The judge is at a nearby hospital receiving chemotherapy when Alex approaches him. He hands the file to the judge asking to please just look at the case. Later on after the softball Game Derek gets a message from Janet saying that the judge has ordered a hearing in Court. Alex keeps quiet.
So how will this turn out for the McFamily? Will Derek and Meredith get Zola back? Derek and Meredith are happy that finally something is moving in terms of their adoption application, and have no idea of Alex’s role in it.
All in all this was a great episode. It was light on the drama this week and quite heavy with the humour, which I felt was a nice change of pace. This season is looking good if the promos of next week are anything to go by. Shonda and her crew are knocking it out of the park; so to speak.
