The return of Katherine Heigl's character, Izzie Stevens would be a popular move with some fans, as Izzie Stevens was one of the most popular characters on Grey's Anatomy in the early seasons. Who didn’t bawl their eyes out when Izzie almost died from cancer? And who wasn’t sobbing uncontrollably when Denny died? We have laughed with Izzie, cried with Izzie and recoiled at certain things she has said or done. The bright and shiny Izzie Stevens is missed on Grey’s Anatomy and many fans would love to see Izzie and Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) re-unite or at least resolve their drama.
Izzie Steven’s Return Would Boost Ratings
Grey’s Anatomy ratings’ for Season 8 have been really good this season and many fans are saying that Grey’s is back to its best this season. Would the return of Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl) complement the cast or would it be difficult for Shonda Rhimes, the creator of Grey’s Anatomy to keep building good storylines for all the characters? The cast is quite large as it is.
Fans have mixed opinions about Katherine Heigl reprising her role as Izzie. She is loved by fans and also hated. But that doesn’t mean her return to the show would not boost ratings and it’s also not likely that she will return in Season 8 as Shonda Rhimes has already pitched how the rest of the Season is going to end. The character of Izzie Stevens was popular and loved; however Katherine Heigl who portrays Izzie is not popular. The public opinion on Katherine Heigl is divided.
Katherine Heigl could come back as a guest star for one or two episodes, but unless they sign her up for Season 9, it’s unlikely that she’ll be back for good and unfortunately if Katherine is signed on as a regular, then that would be a concern to many fans; because it could mean that some of the original cast members are leaving at the end of Season 8 when their contracts expire.
Rumors Imply that Katherine Upset Shonda and ABC
The fact that Katherine had many arguments with ABC network executives and Shonda Rhimes has been all over the press. Michael Ausiello at Entertainment Weekly reported in September 2009 that ABC president Stephen McPherson gave Katherine a public tongue lashing for complaining about a 17 hour work day. It was also reported on the website I Don’t Like You In That Way that Katherine took an earnings dispute to the press; claiming that she should have been paid more than the show’s star; Ellen Pompeo who portrays the character of Meredith Grey, the show’s namesake.
Media Pundit reported that Katherine Heigl was fired by ABC when she failed to return to work at the Grey’s Anatomy set on March 1st, 2010 to finish filming the last five episodes of Season 6, so it would be surprising if Shonda Rhimes agreed to have Katherine back. It is also not likely that Katherine would come back full-time. Why would she? She has always, seemingly been more interested in her film career. Perhaps her film career is flailing and she needs the publicity, but after the way she reportedly treated the network, Shonda, the writers and the other actors, it is highly unlikely they would have her back unless it was to boost ratings as a guest star.
Some Fans Would Love to see Alex and Izzie Back Together
In Katherine’s final scenes as Izzie, Alex Karev, her onscreen husband, told her to go away and not come back; so it’s possible Alex would not be happy to see her again. If Izzie is back to win her ex-husband back then perhaps Alex may come around; but if Katherine is not back on Grey’s Anatomy permanently then the possibility of Alex and Izzie getting back together disappears. Alex would not put up with a part-time wife. A storyline involving Izzie and Alex’s frozen embryos would be interesting. The fans would definitely eat that up. However, some fans posting on Grey’s Gabble have commented that seeing Izzie in a body-bag would be preferable.
So it would seem that Shonda and ABC have a decision to make regarding Katherine’s request to return to Grey’s Anatomy and so far there has been no comment as to whether it will happen. It will be interesting to see how this pans out.
